An Urban Fantasy Anthology

SO I had an idea. Collaborate with other UF writers to put out an anthology. I know it's been done before. I know there are experts out there who will charge thousands of dollars to get you entry into theirs. Most of them promise USA Today Best Seller status.

I'm not going to do that. I simply want to increase our exposure to possible fans by combining our fanbases. So, below are my ideas.

What to publish

  • Short story in the UF Genre, any sub-genre, possibly about 5,000 words plus or minus
  • A novel with each other taking a chapter
  • A chapter from a book we each want to promote
  • Before and/or after each entry, there would be your link , possibly an author bio, and picture.
  • ??

Format

Ebook only, in my opinion. Always open to the idea of doing a paperback, but it can’t be sold as cheaply and would entail extra formatting.
We can go wide or use Kindle Unlimited. Going wide allows us to set the book price at zero. It makes it available to audiences that refuse to use Amazon. Cons are we can’t put the anthology in KU where a lot of readers get their material. Amazon is about 60% of the books sold worldwide.
  • Need to decide on a title and sub title

Book Price

Zero to 99 cents. This isn’t about making royalties; it’s about spreading the word and getting our names in front of more readers. Any money made should go into advertising.

Timeline

Once we have at least ten authors committed, I’m thinking we give it six months to launch from there. One month to write the stories and have them edited. Five months to sell pre-orders. I think the shortest interval we could make this work would be four months, one month to get the stories written and edited, the cover made, and the manuscript formatted. Three months for pre-orders.

Cost

My idea is to make this affordable for everyone. I use 100covers.com for all my covers and they will do an ebook cover for $100. Advertising can be done by each author but that will sort of dilute the effort if we are each doing an Amazon, Facebook, Bookbub campaign. We could commit to a dollar amount and we pool those funds and one of us will be in charge of advertising (probably that person most likely will also publish the book).

Index Order

We could go alphabetically, do it random, or go in order of the size of our mailing lists.

What else?

What haven't I thought of?

Please post a comment (click 'comments' under the title above) if you are interested along with your opinions of what I've outlined. Thanks!

    Author

M.J. Fitzmaurice has published three books in a series (Shasha's Team), a couple short stories, and is working on an Epic Fantasy for his next project. He's helped more than a dozen authors achieve Amazon Best Seller status and is always looking for ways to promote his and other's work. His motto is 'Collaboration not Competition'.
